The room was empty, save Silence, but he was everywhere. The room seemed to grow smaller as we sat waiting. The Master had called me here so Silence naturally followed. I knew better than to think this was a good thing to be called by the Master, but I also knew better than to get myself in trouble. Slowly I found my eyes growing heavy and I rested my chin in my hand. My elbow was resting on my knee as I sat on the floor and the entire position was gaining comfort as my eyelids closed. I felt myself beginning to doze when I heard heavy footsteps echoing through the tunnel. The strange thing wasn’t the footsteps but the number of them. It made my eyes snap open when the steps were accompanied by a resounding chuckle. A chuckle that sent chills rolling down my neck and cascading down my spine. It was familiar, buried deep within the recesses of my mind. As it echoed down the hall I could see something. It was connected to the laugh, but it didn’t belong to it. In the midst of the laugh, I saw a pair of eyes. Green and blue. Beautiful and sad. They were swimming with tears and smiling at the same time. Those eyes gave me goose bumps. The chuckle stopped when the footsteps reached the doorway.
“Child, I am here to speak to you.” The Master’s voice was dark and silky, just as it had always been. I looked at him and saw another man. He was tall with shaggy brown hair. His eyes were bright blue and were just as familiar as the laugh. The Mater often called him Andrew. “It is a shocking thing I have heard. Very shocking indeed. Andrew here,” He patted the man’s arm, “Says that he has heard you talk. Is this true?” I shook my head. No one has heard me talk. I make sure I am alone. “Child, do not lie to me. Have you spoken in front of Andrew?”
“Master, she will not answer truthfully. Do you not remember when I heard her? It was the day I brought her to you. That was almost eleven years ago. I told you of it I’m sure.” The Master scratched his chin.
“That is right, I do remember now.” He stepped toward me; his hand outstretched, and ran his fingertips down my cheek. I turned away from his hand and closed my eyes. “Do you remember, child?” His hand fell from my cheek and I shook my head. “You don’t? That truly is a shame.” His voice was like liquid stone. Hot and flowing through the air. Silence gripped my throat. The pain he caused was almost unbearable. “Well child. Today is the day I take you home.”
